About the Resources Database
Overview:
Our resources database is a searchable collection of IPM resources
originating from the land-grant universities in the Northeast, associated
Cooperative Extension systems, the USDA, and other public agencies.
Our intent is to provide research-based information that is not influenced
by any need to sell a product. Although resources produced by private
entities may be included, we attempt to exclude items from entities
involved in selling pest-management-related products. Inclusion of a
record in this database is not intended to imply endorsement of any
item, product, or idea.
Adding and correcting records:
We encourage users to add resources
to the database by requesting log in permissions. If you have many
items to submit, contact us to arrange
for efficient submission. If you find a mistake related to a record
in the database, please contact us.
Resource Types:
Alerts, Advisories, and Crop News
Alerts, Advisories, and Crop News include crop, pest, and weather
reports from the field. These resources usually focus on one or a
few crop settings in a localized area and for a short period during
the production season.
Example: Connecticut IPM's Biweekly
Fruit Pest Message.
Crop Profiles and PMSPs
All listings of official crop profiles and PMSPs can always be found
at northeastipm.org/rese_profiles.cfm.
Crop profiles describe the IPM situation for a particular crop, including
production figures, important pests, and pest management practices.
They usually focus on one or a few states. Searches in this category
will dynamically generate lists of approved crop profiles currently
found in the national crop profile database.
Example: NJ
Pumpkin crop profile (PDF)
Pest management strategic plans (PMSPs) build
on crop profiles, taking a pest-by-pest approach to identifying current
management practices (chemical and nonchemical) and those under development.
PMSPs also state priorities for research, regulatory activity, and
education/training programs needed for transitions to alternative
pest management practices. The plans are developed in workshops that
include growers, consultants, and other commodity representatives.
Each plan focuses on commodity production in a particular state or
region.
Example: New
England Blueberry PMSP (PDF)
Fact Sheet
Fact sheets are short documents (no more than a few pages) that usually
focus on one pest or issue. These documents provide general information
about pests, such as identification or life history, and may contain
photographs to help the user diagnose the problem. Documents that
contain pest management information, including pesticide recommendations,
are usually found in the Field Guide classification, but many field
guides also include fact sheets and may be classified under both categories.
Example: Annual
Bluegrass Weevil (PDF)
Field Guides
Field guides provide information to aid in IPM scouting, field monitoring,
and pest management decisions. These resources include identification
guides, scouting procedures, Extension pest management and pesticide
recommendations, etc. Field Guides often include fact sheets as part
of the pest management information they provide.
Example: Pest
Management Recommendations for Field Crops
IPM Guidelines/Elements/Protocols/Checklists
These resources are usually point systems or checklists of practices
that are used by various programs to qualify or certify that a grower
or IPM practitioner is using accepted IPM practices. Different states
and organizations use various terms for these checklists such as "IPM
Standards", "IPM Elements", "IPM Protocols",
and "IPM Guidelines", but all are used by institutions such
as SYSCO and agencies such as the Natural Resources Conservation Service
to verify that a grower is actually using official IPM techniques.
They are usually general guidelines that many growers already practice
and all should be able to adopt over a period of time. It is recognized
that adoption of specific practices may not always be possible depending
upon the unique circumstances of the individual grower. However, most
state checklists have built in flexibility to allow for differing
situations.
Example: Elements
of IPM for Fresh Market Asparagus in New York State.
IPM Curriculum
Study guides, lesson plans and other materials that focus on teaching
school children about IPM concepts.
Example:
IPM Curriculum for Grades K to 1 (University of Connecticut)
IPM Priority Lists
These resources state the IPM priorities set by stakeholder groups
for research, education, and regulatory needs in various IPM settings.
These lists inform researchers, Extension personnel, regulators, and
funding agencies of the issues most important to IPM stakeholders.
The Northeastern IPM Center posts IPM Priority lists that we are aware
of on our web site at http://northeastipm.org/work_vegpriority2005.cfm
Example:
Northeast Regional Priorities for Vegetables -2005
Program/Project
These resources describe, summarize, or otherwise address
programs, projects, or people. Examples include:
Resource Index/Web
Page
This resource type contains lists of IPM information of a general
nature. They may be lists of fact sheets, or field guides, or a web
link to collections of IPM resources available via mail order.
Example: Extension
Publications (Maine)
Video/CDs
This category includes VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, or other video-format
resources for scout training and other purposes. Records here are
either directly linked to the source of the video or to articles about
the video.
