Working With Organic Farmers

A conference: Working With Organic Farmers: Enhancing Agency Involvement in the Northeast
The purpose of the conference: to help agency personnel improve their knowledge and understanding of organic farming so they can develop programs for organic farmers.

The target audience: People from Extension, NRCS, FSA, State Ag. Departments, etc. that already have a basic understanding of organic farming and are interested in working more effectively with organic farmers. Participants should be aware of the expectation that they will apply what they learn at the conference by developing programs and resources that encourage and support organic agriculture.

News About the Center

The Insider is Comes Out

Until now, this newsletter has been available to anyone but relatively hidden. Although access has never been restricted, we have not widely publicised its existence nor provided links elsewhere on our site to it. This month that will change. We recently floated the idea of making the Insider more readily available and response from readers was overwhelmingly in favor.

One recurring comment was that we'll have to change the name. Insider was originally intended for Advisory Council members, CWG members, and others with tangible ties to NE PMC. The implication of the name no longer seems to fit. Your suggestions are welcome (send them to Jim and Liz, please). We've had a few ideas so far:

Inside Out; From the Inside Out; On Target; On Target in the Center; Dead Center (well, goes nicely with the 'target' motif, but doesn't sound like we're very active!); Bull's-Eye; In the Bull' s-Eye; Online In the Center (our printed newsletter is In the Center, so we can't use that).

If we tack on "NE PMC" in front or behind any of these, we can probably avoid prior copyrights.

Mosquitoes and West Nile: New Larvicide

A new mosquito larvicide developed at the University of Florida's Medical Entomology Laboratory in Vero Beach is expected to be on the market under the brand name "Skeetercide" in time for the next mosquito season. The "Skeetercide" formulation is based on a naturally occurring mosquito hormone - "trypsin modulating oostatic factor" or TMOF - that is produced in mosquito ovaries and acts to control digestion of the blood ingested when a mosquito bites. When ingested by larvae as part of a mosquito control program, TMOF switches off the digestive system, effectively starving the larvae to death in 4-6 days. The Northeastern Integrated Pest Management Center fosters the development and adoption of IPM, a science-based approach to managing pests in ways that generate economic, environmental, and human health benefits. We work in partnership with stakeholders from agricultural, urban, and rural settings to identify and address regional priorities for research, education, and outreach.
