Maryland’s Home and Garden Information Center (HGIC) helps users solve pest problems using visual diagnostic keys with color photos on its web site.

Now, extension specialist Mary Kay Malinoski (with colleagues David Clement and Jon Traunfeld) has created a unique electronic question-and-answer service, accessible through the HGIC, that allows clients to submit gardening questions (with digital photos) via e-mail. Trained cooperative extension personnel receive the questions and provide research-based information with IPM management solutions to the problems. Priority is given to questions from the Northeast region.

This pilot project was made possible by a grant from the Northeast Regional Integrated Pest Management Grants Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Northeastern Integrated Pest Management Center fosters the development and adoption of IPM, a science-based approach to managing pests in ways that generate economic, environmental, and human health benefits. We work in partnership with stakeholders from agricultural, urban, and rural settings to identify and address regional priorities for research, education, and outreach.
