FUNDING ZEROED FOR IPM CENTERS IN 2011 FEDERAL BUDGET
Since 2000, the Northeastern IPM Center has fostered the development and adoption of integrated pest management, disbursing more than 220 grants (totaling nearly $7.4 million) for projects that focus on important pest problems and provide economic, environmental, and human health benefits to our region. Now the Center faces an uncertain future because the USDA program that supports IPM Centers has not been funded in the proposed 2011 federal budget (which takes effect in October 2011). Read on to learn more about this threat and what you can do to help.
UPDATE: A large portion of our final year of USDA funding (2010-2011) will be distributed as IPM grants to the region in spring 2010. We are pleased to be able to honor our commitment to maintain regional IPM grants programs in the coming year, despite impending changes to the USDA programming that has supported the Regional IPM Centers for the past decade. We anticipate that the Center will be able to continue its service to the region through the first half of 2012, thanks to careful management of our core federal funds. In the meantime, we are eagerly exploring new, diverse opportunities to promote IPM adoption throughout the Northeast.
