New York Farm Viability Institute

Agricultural Innovation Center Grants Program 2006

Deadline: August 1, 2006
Duration: 3 to 24 months
Amounts: up to $250,000/grant

WHAT IS NYFVI'S AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION CENTER GRANT PROGRAM? The New York Farm Viability Institute, Inc. (NYFVI) is seeking proposals for projects of up to a two year duration that will work directly with agricultural producers (field or horticultural crops, livestock, dairy, greenhouse, nursery, turf grass and other specialized agricultural businesses including but not limited to equine and aquaculture enterprises). Projects should focus on developing business plans, expanding marketing opportunities, creating sound business structures, adding enterprises to existing farm businesses, or enhancing the development, production and marketing of farm level value added products. The emphasis is on strategic business planning and development or adding value to products that farmers sell.

TYPES OF WORK THAT MAY BE FUNDED The Institute will consider projects that focus on value added farm level processing that will allow producers to capture larger profit margins or meet their family lifestyle and quality of life goals. In addition, projects that enhance producers' planning skills and ability to make sound business and marketing decisions, are also high priority in the AIC grant program. AIC grant proposals must show evidence that producers have been in the forefront of identifying the needs, barriers to business viability, and/or the potential product or marketing opportunities that the project will address. Proposals for continuation or expansion of current AIC projects must document successes and enterprise-level impacts to date, and indicate how additional funding can extend benefits to more producers or additional regions or sectors.

WHO MAY APPLY? Proposals will be accepted from researchers and educators at academic institutions, extension staff and others involved in agricultural research and development, technology adoption and business assistance in the agricultural sector.
