Position: Extension Agent Ornamental Horticulture -- New Castle County, Delaware

Location:--- The University of Delaware offers students, industry and the community a rich heritage along with the latest in instructional and research technology. This position will be housed at the New Castle County Extension Office in Newark, DE.

Rank and Salary: Extension Agent (12-month appointment) Rank, title, and salary commensurate with training and experience. An Extension Agent is professional employee of the University of Delaware and reports to the County Extension Director. The University of Delaware offers a very attractive benefit package.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree required with Masters preferred with course work in the fields of plant science, horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, or other related field. Two-three years experience in landscape horticulture as well as diagnostic skills related to home horticulture, entomology, weed science, soil science and plant pathology are desired. Ability to work and communicate well with the nursery and landscape industry, volunteers and the public; Excellent verbal and written communication skills and grant writing skills; Strong educational delivery skills; Strong people skills and ability to interact with both youth and adults; Ability and flexibility in exercising both leadership and team membership roles.

Position Description: The successful candidate in this position will identify critical issues of concern to the residents of New Castle County, develop, administer and evaluate innovative, effective and efficient educational programs related to these issues that teach clientele knowledge and skills based on the latest research findings. Coordinate the delivery of commercial ornamental horticulture programming in New Castle County in collaboration with extension personnel, faculty and partnering agencies. Educate and coordinate the Master Gardener Program for New Castle County. This includes educational programs and demonstrations aimed at the proper use of non-invasive plants, water, pesticides, and fertilizer to maintain good environmental quality. Develop an excellent working relationship with all media outlets, contributing articles to local newspapers and extension publications. Develop public and private support for expanding extension priority programs.
