The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit national environmental advocacy organization with more than 1.2 million members and online activists. Position Summary:
NRDC is seeking a Campaign Director to launch a major new initiative designed to reduce private sector use of toxic chemicals in household products, including pesticides, and to promote more sustainable global supply chains. The initiative will focus on influencing corporate decisionmaking as well as educating consumers about environmental health impacts of the products they buy. The Campaign Director will also represent NRDC on selected toxic chemical and environmental health policy initiatives on Capitol Hill.
Essential Functions:
" Develop campaign plans for reducing a targeted list of toxic products. Initially the focus of our efforts will be on household pesticides, but the campaigns will broaden to include other products in later years.
" Direct and coordinate campaign implementation with NRDC teams including staff scientists, attorneys, communications experts, and others.
" In collaboration with the Development Department, seek and obtain funding to continue and expand this initiative.
" Serve as a spokesperson with government policy makers, the press, and the general public on issues related to toxic chemicals in commerce and sustainable supply chains.
" Advocate effectively on Capitol Hill for various health-related priority issues, including some not directly related to the campaign.
" Support other NRDC policy efforts to reduce toxic chemical use and exposure, as appropriate.
Skills and Knowledge Requirements:
" Graduate degree in business, environmental sciences, law, or policy.
" Ten or more years of experience in environmental advocacy, including legislative advocacy.
" Demonstrated experience in engaging private sector on environmental issues. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record in developing and implementing successful corporate campaigns.
" Knowledge of environmental health issues, including exposure and health risks associated with toxic products and pesticides.
" Excellent communication skills, including speaking and writing.
" Flexibility and an ability to prioritize and handle a heavy workload.
" Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people from different professional backgrounds.
