Northern New York Agricultural Development Program Announces Farm Research Projects for 2007

Projects for enhancing the production of dairy, maple, grapes, and field crops; evaluating options for producing biofuel crops, increasing agricultural environmental stewardship and winning the battle against the alfalfa snout beetle are all receiving funding from the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program for 2007.

The Northern New York Development Program supports agricultural research, demonstrations and outreach in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties with the goal of enhancing agricultural productivity and profitability while protecting the regions soil, water and other environmental resources. The Programs 32-farmer advisory committee reviews grant request proposals and selects projects for funding. The projects join the resources, expertise and experience of Cornell University faculty, Cornell Cooperative Extension educators and regional farmers to solve problems and maximize opportunities for New York's North Country agricultural industry.

Healthy Environment, Healthy Economy-A Symposium on Building a Safe and Sustainable Future for New York State December 6 & 7 ---- New Yorkers have an exciting opportunity to have their voices included in a crucial dialogue supporting a healthy future for New York State. Join leaders from the academic, business, government, labor and non-profit arenas for a day and a half symposium convened to steer New York State on the road to a cleaner environment and greener economy.

Healthy Environment, Healthy Economy will feature speakers from across New York State, New England and the West Coast in sixteen panel discussions, two plenary sessions, a keynote address-delivered by Dr. John Tuttle CEO of Daystar Technologies-and the presentation of the New York State Environmental Excellence awards, with a keynote address from Denise M. Sheehan, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. There will also be a large exposition area featuring exhibitors and expert office hours.

2007 New York State Maple Conference January 5 & 6, 2007 ---- The 2007 Maple Conference will be held at the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School in Verona, New York.

Friday features a speaker at 7:00 PM; industry trade show highlighting maple equipment; manufacturers and vendors; and more than 25 exhibitors are anticipated to display a complete line of maple equipment including evaporators, vacuum pumps, tubing supplies, and value-added processing equipment and supplies. Saturday features over 40 of the industry's leading maple experts from throughout North America and Canada presenting over 50 workshops.

The conference is open to the general public, as well as maple producers, and is geared toward all levels of sugar makers. Saturday's trade show opens at 8:00 AM with workshops starting at 9:00AM.

The conference is sponsored by the V.V.S. FFA in conjunction with the New York State Maple Producers Association and Cornell Cooperative Extension. Cost of the conference: Friday and Saturday package when pre-registered $30, Friday only $12, Saturday only $22 for pre-registered or $30 at the door. CCE-Broome County Presents: Lets Write Your Business Plan January 18, 2007 ---- On January 18, 2007 at 7:00pm, CCE-Broome County is presenting a two-hour workshop that will provide an overview of a comprehensive business plan contents (both the narrative and financial statement components), format and how it can be used.

The presenter, Ginny L. Robert, is the Director of the Entrepreneurial Assistance Program at Broome Community College (BCC). She has specialized in entrepreneurship for 19 years, helping thousands of individuals to start and grow small businesses.

Participants will be given a diskette that has a template to develop the financial spreadsheets with Excel soft-ware. Optional purchase of Lets Write Your Business Plan, a workbook developed by the presenter, will also be available. Cost of this workshop is $5. Pre-registration is required.
